The Fades: CACA
Location: London, England UK
Interview:
February 2007

How did the band get started?
I started a musical project with my brother after our previous band imploded in a ball of rock cliches. We then enlisted the best lead guitarist and drummer around to flesh out our tunes, and behold, The Fades were born.

What are you currently working on?

A number of new tracks that are taking a more diverse yet melodic path. We are also spending alot of time rehearsing for our forthcoming US tour which we are very excited about, as a few of us have never been to the US of A.

What kind of music do you listen to and how does it influence your music?
Each of us have wide varying tastes, from Mastadon to The Smiths to Faith No More. But currently we are very much into Part Chimp, The Gossip, Mastadon, Klaxons, Amy winehouse. All new and exciting things can influence your music, but we feel it is important to try not to be inlfuenced by what we initially hear because otherwise you will just replicate your current favourite sounds. It is important for us to be influenced by eachothers musical style and spontatneous natural jams.

What's your opinion on mainstream Rock music today?
What do you like or notlike?
I like inventive rock with intersting views and lyrics, i tend to be put off by heavy emo, I can't say that Fallout Boy do it for me. Plus, I hate bandwagons, we have always been about ignoring the current zeitgeist and playing the kind of music that we want to hear.

Who do you admire?
Mike Patton, John Frusciante, people who do what they do for love and not for kudos.

Why would people want to listen to your music over someone else's?
Beacuse  we are honest and true to ourselves and always try to inject a catchy hook and refrain - theres nothing wrong with being catchy. A track like CACA is as honest as it gets, it came fresh from a jam and hasn't changed much at all.

Who have you worked with and how have they affected your work?
Playing with and watching bands like Art Brut, White Man Kamikaze, Base Battalion and The Moths have inspired us and showed us other ways to pack a musical punch, always offering fresh inspiration. But mainly, i always learn a great deal from the producers we work with. I always find it fascinating to watch how they can take your song and add subtle factors that can take your tune to the next level, and turn a B side into a hit single. Guys like Nat Chan, Will Mcgonagle and Jason Hall have really helped us to mould certain tunes into what they are today.

What is your local rock scene like?
very strong - too strong! some amazing bands have grown from the same streets as us, The Moths, Base Battalion, White Man Kamikaze, Lesser Gods and One Unique Signal are just a few of the bands who provide brilliant competition.

Where do you see yourself in a year from now?
Releasing our second album and touring the world! Any additional information you would like us to know? check out www.thefades.com and www.myspace.com/thefades for info and updates. Thanks!
