How did you get started with your music?
I’ve been singing since I was a little bitty, but I really got started when I maniacally ran away from my Mom in FAO Schwarz and an Agent spotted me. I think I was like 7 or 8 at the time.
What are you currently working on?
ALOT! lol I’m dropping my first mixtape “Cheeky Pop Volume 1†on Oct 31st. I’ve been in the lab finishing up “Vol 2†which should drop in Nov and I have 3 other hosted tapes that come out after that (Shout to Don-E-Blaze, UK stand up)…so I’m losing my mind basically! I’m also doing some writing for other people both here in the US and Overseas. Have some great stuff in the works with Sniper of Real Stuff, Kwame Dennis, Boy Shy(France) H.I.T of Fly Society, Matt Houston (France), Selma (France), A52 ummm and many more whom I cant remember at the moment, and will probably be très pissed I left them out…Sorry guys!
What kind of music do you listen to and how does it influence your music?
I love classic rock and funk. Right now all I have in my ipod is Jimi Hendrix, Bootsy Collins, and George Clinton&The Parliament Funkadelic. It inspires me to think outside of the box and make my own music more organic. So many people try to stick with whatever “formula†is currently hot, and don’t get me wrong, that’s cool cause lets face it we ALL want to sell records, but there are ways to still be fresh and unique….
What’s your opinion on mainstream music today? What do you like or not like?
I love pop. I think people forget how important Pop music is… and everyone knows we’re kind of going through another disco phase with mainstream…a lot of 3 album artists and seat-fillers out there right now. But at the same time there are also a whole **itload of mainstream artists who are making great music… Justin, Gnarls Barkley, Gwen Stefani, Kanye. My heart is still with the indie scene though. Fly Society, Paramore, Lupe Fiasco… those type of acts.

Why would people want to listen to your music over someone else’s?
Because its that “unexpected hot  kind of like… the first time you listened to Kanye’s “Stronger†or “Sexyback†your like umm well I dont know…your confused cause its different and then you realize..nah this is dope! But I’ve got some plain old “hot†for ya’ll too. ;o)
Who have you worked with and how have they affected your work?
Not to gas him or anything but Boy Shy(myspace.com/shyns) definitely had a big affect on me style wise. The very first time I heard his music I was a fan, and it was COMPLETELY in French. I was like yo I have to capture this energy, this is how I want people to feel when they hear my music. That was right around the time I wrote â€Skateboards&Braids†and I ended up giving his clique “Dumpe Fresh†a shout out before I even really knew him lol. The funny part is to this DAY he still has no clue what I’m saying whenever he listens to it… but he thinks its “freezy†as they say in france and hey it’s the thought that counts right!? I’ve had the chance to work with a lot of sick producers and I like to think I take something new from working with all of them. I actually feel slightly corny talking about it because its all so recent, but in the past 4 months I’ve grown a lot. I’m learning how to push myself. Working with Sniper really kicked off a crazy creative spree this summer, his whole production and artist style is just so ill and so global it pushed me to start making songs for the world, like his joint “Around The World†w/Memp Bleek, not just for the
US. Now those are the songs that I’ve gotten the most interest in. Kwame’s tracks showed me how to bust out of being defined by a genre. I remember when I got the tracks I asked him what kind of songs they were and he said “They’re just Kwame Music†lol and I kind of took that and ran with it, just trynna make “Chey Music†whatever felt right, instead of what I thought other people would want to hear…the end result was ill…still is actually I’m about to finish up those tracks for him now. So if when he hears them he thinks they’re wack… I’m definitely gonna be reading this shaking my head haha.
What is your local music scene like?
Hmm I dont know…its NYC…everyone and their mom is a rapper or a singer or a producer or in a band…or starting a band…so I guess real FULL would be the best way to describe it!
What suggestions do you have for other artists in the music industry?
Learn! It took my stubborn ass so long to realize that people were giving me valuable information and advice, even though they were ALL turning me down lol, or saying I want ready. Thank goodness I got in young and I’m still young. But man if I had been where I am mentally3yrs ago at 18… the music scene would be hella different! I’m still learning even now, and getting better with every new project, I’m not there yet but its mad gratifying to look back and see how far I’ve come…

Chey’s work is amazing..i love how she writes all her own songs, and puts a beautiful voice with it to express real true feelins, all her songs come from emotions. Emotions we can all relate on. I can play thru each song and relate to it, i cant say the same for sum for all artists..and chey is clearly all natural beauty, her eyes real, her hair real, her skin color real, and her soul REALLY REAL.. she dont need to try and be sexy, u r naturally sexy gurl, and if u did try and put effort into lookin good, you’d kill em all, dont hurt nobody..keep up the amazing work, ur already on ur way…
