What are you currently working on?
I just finished up my LP “WERK” to be released on citrus to citrus/Warchant Recordings March 2008 I’m in the post stages of “the bayta test” hosted and mixed by DJ Fresh of the Whole Shabang, which I’ll be releasing on iTunes this year with a short-run disc pressing.

Currently in preproduction with Mr.Tower of the Whole Shabang on Poach Stevens & Mr. Tower “the Overstanding” LP. All tracks produced by myself, with features from Opio, Casual, Biagi, J Stalin, and whoever else wants to be involved, too early to tell at this point, should be released by Clear Label late 08- early 09.

What kind of music do you listen to and how does it influence your music?
I listen to it all, Hip-Hop, Rock, Blues, RnB/Soul, Pop, 70’s disco, you name it, I probably have it in my collection. As a producer I pay attention heavily to drums, I feel like drums are the backbone and work horse in hip-hop so I like to have though out and composed drum change-ups and break downs in my beats. I’m a huge fan of live instrumentation so if I had the capital, I’d record live music all day. But in the meantime I try to make beats that at least try to equal live instrumentation. But synths mixed with sample chopping also have a large place in my heart. When I write, I feel like a feeling a song has my influence me more than the song itself.

What’s your opinion on mainstream music today? What do you like or not like?
I feel like it’s all about making that hit, fitting it to that niche to cop a dollar. But it always has been. Still I feel like today allot of music is just bland, heartless tunes built for the club scene. Nothing wrong with that except there seems to be less and less classics coming out, classics like constantly hit in the 50’s 60’s, 70’s and even 80’s. Another thing that bugs me is that albums are rarely thought out and completed albums these days. I can name only a few since 2000 that actually have been. It’s mostly 3 singles and some filler tracks. In the backlash of that though the independent scene has been blossoming and I think the music coming out of that is what has been really exciting me the past few years.

Who do you admire?
Hieroglyphics, they took they’re limited mainstream success and didn’t stop when it ended. They pushed on, organized, kept releasing material and built a small empire. They continue to keep doing what they love doing and understood they couldn’t do it separately.

Why would people want to listen to your music over someone else’s?
Why wouldn’t they? I don’t know, I guess I represent the working man’s hustle in most of my music. I feel like most people got jobs, mouths to feed, bills to pay, rent to keep up and struggle hard to maintain it all in a positive manner. It’s not hella gangster and it’s not this scientifical lyrical thing that treats hip-hop like a closed circle of reincarnated wizards from the past. It’s relatable, accessible, soulful, honest, and it ain’t afraid to laugh at itself either. If I’m wrong then I’m wrong and oh well.

Who have you worked with and how have they affected your work?
DJ Fresh, Mr Tower, J Stalin, Ashkon, Mobb Unit, the Rondo Brothers- Latrice Barnett, Kelly Atkins of 20 minute Loop, Handsomeboy Modeling School- Dan the Automator, Prince Paul, Casual, Opio, Dj Evil Dee, DJ Smite, Finlism, DJ Mike Biggz, Josey Stingray, etc. I like the fact that all these people take what they do seriously, they all care about their music and always want it to be the best it can be. But at the same time they love it and enjoy it, all smiles. It’s always a good environment to be in weather touring or recording.

What is your local music scene like?
A lot of Punk Rock, Rock, Ska, reggae, hyphie, mobb music, and hippie hop, in the East Bay, Electronic and House is HUGE in SF.

What suggestions do you have for other artists in the music industry?
KEEP YO DAY JOB!!!!!! The chances of you making it is hella slim EVEN if you put it all in the pot. I’ve had tracks licensed to movies and commercials, done vocal work, been featured on other albums and have toured a few times. When the money comes, it’s good, but stacked up to the time I put in, I get paid more at the job, and the job is a steady pay check. Keep focused on what you got to do with your music, but don’t lose track of reality by getting stars in your eyes.

Where do you see yourself in a year from now?
Taking my wife daughter on walks around lake Merritt or the Oakland zoo. That’s all that’s important anyway.
