How did you come up with the name :
Don Diz : The year we started Don Diz we lived in L.A. and at the time, for some random reason, we were watching the God Father series. When the time came for the brand´s name brainstorming session, my brother threw in the name Don Diz. We liked it so much that we chucked everything else out the window.
Description of clothing line :
Don Diz : To be honest this is probably the hardest question to answer. We have a saying within the family that is: “whatever, whenever”. That means that we STRONGLY encourage you to do whatever it is you want to do, whenever you feel like doing it. We also happen to create and manufacture clothes with outstanding quality control and fit. We started the brand in L.A in 2007, moved it to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which is our hometown, and in 2009 we moved the whole operation back to the U.S. Or HQ is in Miami, and our manufacturing is in L.A.
We also strongly believe in philantropy. We have a special line within the brand called “Flagcone Series”. The art work is hand drawn by japanese-brazilian artist Yumi Inada. They are Icecream cones with different flags within. They represent social, political and cultural views we wish to stir-up. Part of the proceeds goes towards children in need.
Who are your influences :
Don Diz : Don Diz is a mix of several references, from pop culture influnces in tokyo, to skate lifestyle in L.A and NYC. We´re big fans of The Hundreds and how far Bobby and Ben Hundreds have been able to take an independent brand. Shepard Fairey and Obey have always been a huge benchmark for us and of course there´s BAPE. We throw all that into a melting pot together with all the other references we end up being exposed to travelling between Rio de Janeiro, L.A and Miami.
Any plans for the future with your clothing line :
Don Diz : We´re already developing an entire men´s cut & sew collection (altough our t-shirts are already cut and sewn to our exact specs) which should be out sometime in the Fall 2010. The women´s collection is also on the drawing board with some neat tank tops, bottoms and underwear. We´re very much looking foward to these new releases because they are looking fantastic so far.
One of the next steps we also plan on taking is to go strong into Japan and Asia. We´ll wait and see how that goes.
