Check out the new song from DJ PhillyPhil – My Only Friend
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am originally from the great city of Houston, but I also grew up with my grandparents in Los Angeles and Compton. I have been around music all my life, from the church choir to the drummer to becoming a DJ and finally becoming a musician. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to get to this point in my career but with time I became who I am today.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
My favorite track as of right now is My Only Friend simply because it mixes my singing and rapping skills together and shows the people a lot more of my talents. I produced the beat and wrote the song and I put a lot of work into this newest track. I feel really good about all of my most recent songs.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
I actually think my hardest challenge was simply getting started and getting my name out there. It seems so impossible at times and with everybody trying to become rappers as well, it makes it hard for people to notice me. I feel like I’m stuck in the middle of a big crowd and I’m the smallest person. Even though I have the talent and work ethic, it’s still very hard to just show the world what I have to offer when there are tons of new rappers trying to get signed.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
I one time tried to “buy” Twitter followers to make a good impression on the Twitter world and for some strange reason, I lost like 75k followers after “buying” 150k or so. It must be real crazy to see somebody drop 75k followers in a week. I will never buy followers or services like that again. I started using real promo techniques and now my numbers are climbing and my fan base is building up very nicely!
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Well like I mentioned earlier, avoid online promotion websites that offer to sell you followers and likes on Facebook and all that. Just get a manager or A&R like I did and excel your career the right way. There are tons of A&Rs looking and managers looking for talent Also, don’t give up on a song or idea, just find creative ways to improve it. And be careful of scams online, try not to give the wrong people your money that you need to invest in your career.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
All I really have to say is believe in something bigger than yourself. Dreams may be hard to reach but if you try, you just might reach them.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Well since I’m a DJ, I love to play my music at the clubs I work. The people love new, exciting music, and that’s what I give them. I also like to post my tracks on my social networks and see what happens.
Where can people visit you?
