Exclusive Interview
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today:
Well Aichjones is from the Southside of Houston and I, D-DUBB am from the Northside of Houston.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
It’s an upbeat song that catches your ear and introduces one of our many styles of music.
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see?
Well we are currently working on cross country promotions and building a strong fan base. You can expect to see the Educated Minds debut album I Love The Chocolate at the beginning of July, but in hand on June 30th in San Marcos, TX.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Getting people to listen. People hear your music, but very few listen to what is being said. Plus when you’re an underground artist the listeners want to compare you to what’s on the radio which we can’t be compared to because our style is totally different.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
Not getting love from our own city. We would do a show in Houston and some of our own people wouldn’t come out to support. To remedy that we moved to San Marcos, TX and started performing in Austin, College Station, Huntsville and San Antonio which has raised eyebrows and opened ears of people we know. They see us posting all these crazy show pics and now they are finally getting on. Sometimes strangers are you biggest supporters.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
The potential to fail and the potential to succeed is the same. You have to sustain your drive because this road is not for the faint of heart.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Make your CDs marketable. You are competing against mainstream and other local artists. The quality of your music should be backed up with quality presentation. No writing on CDs, don’t half ass your artwork and spell check everything! Find a graphic artist and get a print production company.
What are the best ways to sell your products as an artist?
Sell merchandise such as T-shirts, bracelets, etc at shows and sell your CDs on consignment in stores. You can sell CDs at shows, but a person will buy a T-shirt at a show before a CD. Most of the time they will get both if you market it right. Also go through Tunecore online. Great company.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Free live shows. Online promotion through Facebook and Twitter, but Live shows is where we get most of our fans.
