How did you come up with the name?
– The name came one night while I was in the shower (yes, I do my best thinking in the shower). I had just finished up brainstorming some new designs with my old man, and I knew I needed a crazy name that people would not be able to forget. Love it or hate it, once you hear the name Sugar Steak, you are not going to forget it. I actually had no idea it was the name of an actual recipe until I was looking into URLs for the company. Needless to say, I love the name, simply because it can’t be easily forgotten and it perfectly defines the line.

Description of clothing line?
– Sugar Steak Apparel is a clothing line for those that want to wear something truly unique and aren’t afraid to take a risk with their graphic tees. It’s light-hearted, ass-backwards, less-serious, and downright stylish. None of our prints are done by machine, all of them are created by hand on traditional screen machines right here in Salt Lake City. Individuals are guaranteed to remain individuals while wearing SSA because the quantity of shirts available is purposefully limited (many tees only have a few hundred available) so not everyone that wants one will get one. The chance of you running into someone else wearing an SSA tee is rare, but if you do, be sure to say “hi” since they are also part of the Sugar Steak family.

Who are your influences?
– Mainly all the other clothing lines that overly-saturated our society with shirts covered in daggers, skulls, rhinestones, wings, more skulls, swords, more skulls, dragons , and so on. Not because I like these shirts, but because I can’t stand them. We all know the brands I’m talking about, all the shirts look the same; and in-turn everybody wearing them looks the same. I decided to counteract this problem by designing shirts that were completely opposite from all the macho, tough-guy junk. If I can save just one soul from a glitter-winged fate I will be happy with what SSA has accomplished. As far as brands I like that have inspired me, my hat goes off to brands such as: Stheart Clothing, Kill Brand, Johnny Cupcakes, and any other brand that wasn’t afraid to take a risk.

What sets your brand different from others?
– I put an ice-cream cone on a piece of meat. I mean, who does that? What sets Sugar Steak Apparel apart from other brands is the fact SSA is completely unique, and to ensure these designs stay unique everything has been trademarked. No one else out there has ever themed a clothing line after such a crazy idea. Sugar Steak Apparel takes the term “opposites attract” to a whole new level, combining crazy ingredients in order to produce a fresh, tasty apparel line.

Are there any challenges you run into while running a business?
– Balancing time between my business and the rest of my life is definitely the most challenging thing. Fortunately, I love fashion so I enjoy what I’m doing a majority of the time–I just dislike the legal garbage that comes with owning a business. I don’t enjoy working with lawyers, taking care of trademarks, and financials, but the upsides of Sugar Steak far outweigh stuff like that.

Any plans for the future with your clothing line?
– We have lots planned on the horizon for SSA. About two dozen additional design concepts are already created and a few new ones will be released this summer. Limited editions will be coming soon as well; these will be numbered and kept in very low quantities, under 250 total tees will be available of each design. In addition to this, the limited edition tees will also be printed on colors other than black, so right away people will know you’re wearing a limited edition Sugar Steak shirt. I am also looking to get Sugar Steak involved in some sponsorships–I’m always down to support others’ talents and abilities.
