Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
First off let me thank y’all for the opportunity to sit down with y’all and get the word out about y’a boy to the public, so big salute to WWS Magazine. But yeah My name is Holla or Holla Mann whatever makes you feel good and I’m reppin the one and only Flint Michigan. Whaddup Doe?! to the whole 810 I’m out here puttin in work for us. What can I say man? I’m just’ a ghetto kid wit’ some’n to speak on. It’s a lot goin on wit’ my city right now from an economic standpoint to the level of violence going down, it’s straight madness out here . I basically try to incorporate a little of all that madness in the music as to shed light on the subject versus shying away from it. I feel prone to do so because I came up on all the bout it sides of Flint from the Buck (Bucktown) to the south-side in the Evergreen Regency projects or Beirut as we call it to the North side. I try to be that voice for the mentality we grow up with so I can hopefully make someone feel their not alone in there struggles or the the day to day.Along with doin that I love to jus’ spaz on the beats ya feel me? I’ts nuttin like just saying some eyebrow raising bars on a song.. that’s what I’m known for. I’d have to say my upbringin got me to rappin and doin this music, I come from a real musical family fa’ real I mean moms was in the choir, pops gotta band and even my granny use to sing in her day. It was my uncle who put me up on rap tho’ he use to throw these stupid basement parties and I would jus’ take it all in cuz’ him and his crew rapped and they would play everything from LL to Rakim , the Fat-boy’s and M.C. Breed..R.I.P Breed too.Mix up everything I jus” said and there you have it, Holla Mann, I ecompass all that and put it out there for the world to eat up…I just do my thing…did that sound corny?..(laughs).
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see?
Aww man I got a few things goin on musically. Right now whats poppin is the Gun and A Dream Mixtape, I just dropped that on Datpiff.com (http://www.datpiff.com/Holla-Mann-Gun-And-A-Dream-mixtape.244992.html). I always get a lotta love over there so good lookin’ to whoever own that shit. Shout out to the folks who download and stream it too, I appreciate y’all whole heartedly. I’m gonna make that my first mixtape series jus’ cuz’ of the energy thats surrounding the project, I’m actually gon drop Gun and Dream 2.0 very soon and that jus’ bananas! Also I’m workin on a another project wit’ my brother Incredible B.A, thats my partner in rhyme right there and he real heavy wit’ the bars. Y’all can scoop his Black Joker mixtape on Datpiff and he smashin niggas in GrindTime GA the battle league down south. Me and him are gonna drop some music on y’all and thats jus’ gon raise the bar so high cats might have to smoke like Whiz to get up there. Other then that you know it’s the daily grind, tryna line up shows, do more promo, get some paid gigs…lemme say that one again.. get some PAID GIGS!! it ain’t easy being independent so y’all pay a brother what he worth. Sometime in the near future I’m gon’ drop some more videos with my MIA-yayo connect INK, he shot my first solo video for the cut “How you Feelin” he just a real good dude man y’all check my work and his on youtube (http://youtu.be/0Jre7j6A3xE). I may post more videos for Gun and A Dream or 2.0 I don’t know we’ll see how the chips fall. Definitely expect to see more music, more moves being made and more of me in the near, near future..I feel like I’m the that dude right now and the world need to take notice…don’t make me call them Murder mitten folks on y’all…(Laughs) ..now I’m actin up right now…but look out for me on the real tho…I’m comin full steam!
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Ummm I’d say whack ass niggas….yeah..it would have to be that above all else. When I say whack I don’t mean just on some cornball shit I mean just whack musically, Dj wise and in the sense of networking. Cats be on some real hollywood shit..actin like they got it poppin all over the place but ain’t really movin like dat. Just be straight up man…don’t be on no fraud shit, I get so sick of dudes runnin off at the mouth about “Oh I can do x,y and z for you”…fuck outta here wit’ dat homey stop sellin me the dream and show me the money word to jerry. Suckas attract suckas and thats who run the game right now, a bunch of sucka’s feel me? I mean half these niggas ain’t sayin nuttin wit the rhyme and jus’ be on cuz’ of a co-sign..that shit is the worse to me…”Oh dis my man and he nice, now make him a star”…beat it!! you suck and that nigga do to he jus’ kissed yo’ ass enough to get in that position. What ever happened to talent?, drive ? or just keepin it funky? If you had to gain yo way in this thing off a co-sign or a paid co-sign don’t expect to last to long cuz’ now yo’ career depends on this man word.I can’t operate like that my momma ain’t raise no sack chaser..I refuse to let anyone else be in control of my future. Thats really my major issue other then that everything else is just grind..you get out this game what you put into it.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
The Decision to head down south is the only thing I can think of but even that wasn’t really a setback it was more of a culture shock. The south is a whole diffrent type of world man it’s a lot goin on down here..cats is gettin money, chicks is ballin, Bugatti’s and Lambo’s is being whipped around..gays is like all over the place..(laughs) it’s crazy. Like the way they get down at first had me gon’ but once you get to know the right people down here it’s all good. It was just hard to familiarize myself with the surroundings and how everything works but luckily homies like my man L.A.C from the westside, Stebo my engineer and the Karnivore Klick accepted me into the fold and it was on from there. Leaving Flint really bugged me out at first but if you can make it past 21 there then the rest of the world is piece of cake and I’m hungry.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Industry rule #4080!! fa’ real y’all research that one cuz’ these niggas’ll rape yo momma in yo’ bed if you let’em! stay on top of your business cuz’ no one has your best interest at heart. Put yo trust in God and go with your gut, if something seems like sideways avoid it all cost because somebody else’s bull can get yo’ name messed up and you ain’t even do nothing. Get your Ascap and BMI and publishing papers right so you can get what you owed because if not it’s a wrap. Copyright all of yo’ works…if you gotta do the poor man’s joint first do that but get it done. What else? ..jus’ keep it G, say what you mean and mean what you say because you never who you talking to out here, all these rap cats just ain’t rappers and saying the wrong thing may get you hurt so jus’ be a man of your word and be stand up.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Stay positive, stay working and stay prayed up. Please believe I know it gets hard when you looking at 106 and Park and you see these bozo’s doin what you want to and you stuck at home. You can’t even be mad at them you just gotta hustle a lil’ bit harder so hopefully someday somebody will be sitting at home calling you lame one day. You can’t give up, you just can’t do it, it’s way to much success out here for you to throw in the towel. Look at Jay, look at Russell Simmons, hell look at Soulja Boy. They all mad it happen by just believing…you gotta have unwavering faith in what god has in store for you and in ya’ self. Don’t get me to preachin’ brotha I’ll get the sermon poppin in this thang…momma always said I should have gone into religion…mmmmm?…we’ll see.
What are the best ways to sell your products as an artist?
You gotta put it out there, you gotta sell it bro. Get a website, get a paypal and go in. Rock it yo’ self first and then once people start liking it then you tax’em. It’s like how the weed man do..he may blow one wit’ you the first time just to let you see what he workin wit’ but the next go round you gotta ante up. It’s so many ways to do it, even Reverbnation has a merchandise function on there. If you out there on the road tho just make sure to have some tee’s or some towels or whatever you may have on deck so you can get it off. If it’s music ya’ best bet is Itunes, Rhapsody and Amazon and all that, they’ll work wit’ ya.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
I’m big on twitter, get at me, @kalide_05 is where you can holla at the man. I always drop new music or exclusives on there, I think it’s one of the best ways to put yourself out there to everyone at once. Always follow back that’s a must, I mean if someone follows you they obviously have some sort of interest in you so make it easy on ya’ self and follow’em back. The internet has made it so easy to connect with people from all over the world with the click of a button. I spend huge chunks of time on the net…I mean it’s cats bangin my jams in parts of the world I can’t even pronounce…that’s great, you gotta do it. Hit them streets too, make face time with the mixtape vendors, mom and pop shops and the clubs. Make it, press it, push it…it sounds simple but it’s a lotta hardwork with a lotta reward, jus look at me I’m interviewing with y’all…that’s big for me and my city.
Where can people visit you?
ladies!!…Motel 6 room 810! you bring the panties I’ll bring the Bumpy face (laughing) now I’m jus’ foolin. hit me on the web man I’m always online gettin it in….
y’all come thru and see what I’m talkin bout I’m usually foolin or droppin that shit you like. Is it time for the “rapper close out line”? …aight.. Holla Mann!!, Gun and A Dream, Fli-city standup!! leggo!
