Exclusive Interview
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am from the Jamaica Plain part of Boston. I got where I am today through a lot of dedication and hard work I didn’t even know I was doing. When I was younger in high school my friends and I would fuck around and make music after school everyday. In my senior year of high school, which was in 2010, I decided to take my music to another level and get a mixtape professionally done. So in September of 2010 I dropped my mixtape “Before They Clip My Wings” hosted By Dj Moneybags and garnered a lot of buzz around the city of Boston. I didn’t realized how much impact I had in the city until after the buzz went away. Here I am two years later trying to step it up another notch.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
The current song I am promoting to everyone is called “Xxplosive 199x.” I wrote this song high as fuck on a bus ride to New York. The song is about what type of weed I smoke and how I feel when I’m on it. I wouldn’t consider myself a pothead, but I sure do love getting high.
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see?
I am currently working on my mixtape entitled “#90sback.” My expectations for it are high, very high. I want to make an impact nationally with this mixtape. You can expect to hear some nice smooth 90s beats, surprises and overall good quality real music. I hope when the mixtape drops people will understand why I have been holding out on it so long. I want this mixtape to last forever in people’s stereos and iPods.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
The hardest challenge to face in this industry is getting your name out there. You can have the dopest video, but if you don’t have a big draw then it doesn’t mean anything. I’m still struggling to get my name out but it isn’t easy, everyday is a step forward in the process.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
The biggest setback in my career was getting into smoking and chilling, with partying occasionally. These past two years since I’ve been in college all I have been doing is drinking and smoking. I just loved being high and getting away from everything. I realized it was a problem recently and have cutback on it a whole lot. All I do now is work and make music. I bounced back by taking all the stress that I put into the partying lifestyle and channeling it into music.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Some things artist needs to be careful of is everything. To the general public, us as artists, have to portray ourselves as perfect and flawless so one wrong move can ruin your whole career. So just be careful of the people who your around and the decisions you make if you want to last long in this industry.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Suggestions I have for other artists such as myself is learn the game as you play it and don’t let the game play you. That is all.
What are the best ways to sell your products as an artist?
The best way to sell your products as an artist is through your personality. People won’t be comfortable buying your products until they’re comfortable with you.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
My favorite way to promote my music and myself is through text messages. This is my favorite way because I never know what to expect what people have to say. Most people are aggravated that I’m texting my music but I got to do what I gotta do. I like texting people too because they give out their honest opinions and that keeps me humble. A good “fuck you” keeps me down to earth.
Where can people visit you?
You can visit me on twitter @jvizz_92 , Facebook by searching jvizz, or on my tumblr jvizz.tumblr.com. Don’t be afraid to follow, I need it.
