Exclusive Interview
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am originally from the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania. I am now currently located in South Philadelphia. I was always into making music, but I didn’t start making hip-hop beats until about age 16 (I’m 20 now). My production has gotten to the point that it is today by hard work and diligence. Also by being surrounded by some really talented producers/artists in general.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
“I Go Where The Trees Go” is going to be the single off of a project I am self releasing entitled I Go Where The Trees Go EP. Going where the trees go can mean a lot of different things, but feel free to interpret the title however you like. The EP will be available for free download July 4th 2012 on jxlbeats.com.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
I feel like the real bullshit won’t come until I’m more established in the industry. But for now, the biggest issue is money and figuring out how to get my music heard by as many people as possible.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
A few months ago some bitchmade scumbag stole my Macbook pro out of my house. I lost about four years of solid work. I spent two months worth of rent money to buy another one. However, in the end I think the loss made me work harder as a producer. Sometimes it is good to start fresh.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
1. People trying to eat off of your hard work
2. Laziness
3. Bitchmade scumbags who sneak around stealing computers and thieves in general.
4. Don’t be a follower. No one wants to hear a shittier version of an artist that’s already established.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
One of my homies explained it the best: “I just try to make music that I would want to listen to”- @antonym
When I first started producing I was just trying to make beats that made rappers happy. Now I make beats that make me happy.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
I mostly promote on my website jxlbeats.com. Look out for the “I Go Where The Trees Go” tee shirts and snapbacks though.
