Exclusive Interview With Vienne V

WWSMAG: How is it being a female trying to break on the scene?
VV: It’s difficult. I think there are so many expectations for females in regards to looks that do not apply as much to the men. It seems like there is a certain mold that female artists are supposed to fit and unfortunately, when you look at all of the major female pop stars here, none of them look like me. I have received a lot of emails from young Asian American girls who are so happy to hear a female Asian is having some success in Top 40 music.

What genre would you consider your music?
Definitely pop haha!

Where do you see yourself in the near future?
Signed, to be popular by going viral For the Asian American community, it is awesome! Great talents such as AJ Rafael and David Choi have been able to get recognized. In addition, many artists have been able to be successful without a label and some have even turned down the labels so they can have more control over their careers.

When did you get your break?
I got my break in 2011 when someone who had seen me perform decided to take a chance on me.

When did you know music was what you wanted to do?
Ever since I was little. I used to sing everywhere. I used to become obsessed with a song and listen to it over and over again. It got to the point where my sister and my cousin would hide my CDs from me so I wouldn’t drive them crazy singing the same songs. Music has and will always be a part of my life.

Are there any barriers with you being Asian?
It’s funny, the area that I grew up in didn’t have many Asian families but I always felt like I belonged and was accepted. In music, however, I have heard that DJs at major radio stations have made on air comments like “she doesn’t sound like she’s Asian” when playing my songs. In addition, several people in the industry have told my manager that if I were blond and blue eyed that I would be a breakout top 40 artist. I don’t know about that, the competition is pretty tough, but I do think the tide will change and more Asian Americans will be recognized here in the US.

Is there anyone you are dying to work with?
There are so many people I would love to work with. The first two that come to mind are Christina Aguilera and Taylor Swift.

Did you have any regular 9 to 5s before being a musician?
Not really 9 to 5, but when I was in school I had part time and summer jobs teaching ESL classes and working in a doctor’s office.

Who is on your ipod right now?
Christina Aguilera, Taylor Swift, Far East Movement, Kelly Clarkson, Etta James, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum…the list goes on and on.

Who has inspired you?
There are so many people that inspire me. My parents are definitely a big inspiration. They have worked so hard to get to where they are and always encourage me to follow my heart. I am also inspired by so many artists that are out there like Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

Who is the next big thing, you feel like?
Haha…hopefully me? =p Otherwise it’s back to school!
