Exclusive Interview

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I was born in New York and lived there until I was 14, I bounced around from Harlem to Spanish Harlem, Upstate, the Bronx etc. I have also lived in a couple states and now a Philadelphia resident. I started rapping about a year and 2 months ago (when I moved from Vashon Island to Philadelphia) and at first it was just for fun. I started in a group called the DutchMasterz making some pretty fun chill songs. One day it just came to me really that I should continue on my own (the DutchMasterz put out a mixtape and died down) so I started recording, put a mixtape together, and it’s been out now for two months. I Have been lucky enough to get some shows at the Philly Bike Race, The Arts Garage in Philly, and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
My debut project “Control,” which is a mixtape that was released about two months ago. The inspiration for the mixtape at first was just to make a tape that people could hear. Very soon however, before I could even notice, it became a collective of experiences and things I had learned since I’ve been in Philly. It’s dedicated to my grandfather Earl Rawlins.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
So far it’s really been against myself really. Before I even thought about having a show, the thought of performing or even speaking publicly was a huge fear. And with faith and belief I’ve been able to overcome that fear where I found a true love hidden.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
Certainly before I even had an idea as to what my mixtape looked like, I lost about 4-5 months of lyrics from my iPhone notepad. At first I was extremely hurt and questioned what’s going on, but soon realized if I have true faith in where I’m going then every step is golden.

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
With me I like to make sure I’m making a song because it’s how I feel and because it’s what I want to put out and not because it’s trendy or sounds like the last radio hit.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Always make the music what you want to make and never let anyone or anything change who you are as an artist by any means. Walk by faith not by sight. there will be times where it seems like the clock is going backwards but just have patience.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
So far I’ve just been sending my music to a lot of blogs and reviewers and such. Twitter is cool when you have a lot of followers (@reignofralph, lol). And pretty soon I’ll be giving away a ton of CD’s at upcoming performances.

Where can people visit you?
Philly and New York.
