Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today. Knightshift: I’m Knightshift, and my soul wanted me to be here… Chioke: I’m Chioke, and me and Shift are from Richmond, CA. We been friends since we were teens, and started recording music together several years ago after a mutual friend, DJ Icewater, suggested that we start working together.
What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see? Chioke: We’re working on our full length album, BRICKYARD COVE. Listeners can expect to hear the emotion of hustlers and blue collar black men in America when they listen to our music. The struggles in our lives, and how love for your family and your people will conquer all.
What is one of the most drastic changes you’ve made about yourself in the last year? Knightshift: Learning to keep the reigns on your cool when taking suggestions from folks… Chioke: Yea, and accepting the fact that, if you know the eventualities in life from your actions, then there’s nothing to worry about. Just keep it moving forward towards them eventualities…
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry? Chioke: Territorial rivalries. Coming from a place like Richmond, CA, we can get treated as outcasts in our region at times ya kno, amongst our neighboring cities like Oakland and San Francisco Knightshift: I’d also say money and gaining respect from others has been a challenge we’ve had to face…
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back? Chioke: The many violent deaths of friends has proven to be setbacks at times. You got to be so realistic out here man. What it takes to survive can be distracting. I’d also say, sometimes friends have been our biggest detractors and they’ve been the ones to discourage us from accomplishing our goals. We bounced back by not letting that negativity deter us. Shake the hate, and shake the fake.
What are some things artists need to be careful of? Chioke: Artists need to be real careful of believing that the world owes them something because of their talents. That’s that mindism that prevents you from getting where you need to be. You ain’t got to steal, but you got to take what it is you want in life, because it’s not going to just be given to you… Knightshift: Man i’d say, artists shouldn’t be getting caught up in people’s praise and/or criticism
Chioke: Yea, like Chuck and them said, “don’t believe the hype…”
What would you spend a million dollars on? Knightshift: Probably just a modest studio tucked away somewhere in the cut, with some more shit we won’t discuss. Pops – a low key spot in Tahoe; nice pad for moms and the fam; Sis – a condo; and my folks debt off; me and my broad vacationing somewhere feeling closer to God. Chioke: Better homes and gardens man. A seperate fridgerator in the cooking area filled with nothing but Hawaiin Punch.
What was your biggest risk taken in your career? Chioke: You risk everything. Everything that has value and meaning to you, you risk it all for the just the notion of being successful.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself? Knightshift: Work hard, and play longer man.
What are the best ways to sell your products as an artist? Chioke: Online music distribution, the social networks, the independent record chains and hand to hand sales
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music? Chioke: Performing live on stage. We have a great stage show that we’re always working to improve upon. It’s great introducing people to our music by means of the live show. Videos are really good promotion nowadays, whether it’s a music video promoting a single, or you know, videos just using creative ways to let your audience see you and what you claim to represent Knightshift: To add to what C said, the live show is definately a way we’ve used to bring our music and artistry to folks. Along with that, we can’t forget about the radio, both commercial and the non-commercial stations. Word of mouth is still the best form of promotion. You got to keep the streets talking…
